KATHMANDU: The United Nations on Tuesday condemned threats made to journalists in Nepal over their coverage of the murder of a prominent media tycoon.
Newspaper editors in Nepal have said they received anonymous telephone calls and emails warning them against reporting the killing of Jamim Shah, who was gunned down in Kathmandu this month.
“These threats send a chill through the entire community and are condemned,” said Richard Bennett, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal.”Unfortunately, violence against the media is not rare in Nepal.

Transport minister Chirau Mwakwere has lost his Cabinet and Parliamentary seats after a Mombasa court nullifies his election.
Mr Mwakwere had earlier arrived in court to hear the petition outcome while accompanied by his wife, children and two brothers.
Plain clothes policemen were deployed to keep the law. Public entry into the courtroom was stopped at 8.30am.
The petition was filed by voter Ayub Juma Mwakesi.
Mr Mwakesi wanted the election declared null and void, alleging that the entire exercise was marred by irregularities.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore said on Monday it will go ahead with existing plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but further pledged reductions will depend on a successful agreement in global climate talks.
Environment Minister Yaacob Ibrahim told parliament Singapore would start implementing energy efficiency measures announced last year that would cut emissions by 7-11 percent on business as usual levels by 2020.

ABU GHOSH: Fifty chefs in the Arab-Israeli village of Abu Ghosh on Friday (January 08) broke a Guinness World Record for the largest hummos bowl, weighing over four tonnes – beating the record set in Lebanon just two months ago.
Lebanon”s record weighed nearly half as much as this newest record.

KARACHI: The city was rocked by a fresh spate of violence in which 11 people, including activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), two women and a child, were gunned down.

Leading Islamist dissident Sheikh Hassan al-Turabi said on Saturday that his Popular Congress Party (PCP) has nominated its deputy chief Abdullah Deng Nhial, a Dinka southerner, to run for the Sudanese presidency in April’s elections. Mr. Nhial was a professor in Juba University in 1985 then a minister of Guidance and Endowments following the 1989 coup; a minister for peace and reconstruction; the White Nile governor in 1994 before siding with Turabi in his 1999 major fallout with Bashir.

GELANG PATAH: Some 200 fishermen in Tanjung Kupang village are upset as countless fishes have died in the nearby Tanjung Adang waters.
One of the fishermen who only wished to be known as Ali, 43, said he discovered the dead fishes as he was going out to sea on Monday.
“I was surprised to see not only dead fish floating but crabs as well.
“I usually catch about RM200 worth of fish each day and this incident will reduce my catch,” he said here on Tuesday.

The Sudanese government announced today that it is considering joining the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), as a full fledged member, the country’s deputy energy minister said Monday.
OPEC headquarters in Vienna Azhari Ibrahim told reporters on Monday at the oil cartel meeting in Luanda that joining OPEC is “under discussions within the government of Sudan” but no final decision has been made. Sudan is currently an observer in the organization.
