Apple’s iPhone 4S might be its latest all-singing and all-dancing smartphone, and it might be made out of some rather nice looking glass and metal, but according to the latest tear-down report, the iPhone 4S costs Apple just $196 to produce. This puts the iPhone 4S at just $0.49 more than its older sibling, the iPhone 4, despite the latest handset sporting a dual-core A5 CPU, a considerably more well-spec’ed 8 megapixel camera, and a CDMA/GSM chip.According to IHS iSuppli’s numbers, and we’re not going to argue with them, the 16GB iPhone 4S costs just $196 to manufacture, while the 32GB [...]

The Siri personal assistant application for the iPhone 4S has been ported onto the iPhone 4, supposedly proving that the older hardware is capable of running the app. Developer Steven Troughton-Smith installed the Siri and Springboard files from the 4S onto an iPhone 4 and was able to get it working on the previous generation device. 9to5 Mac, which is working with the developer, reports that the app can recognise your spoken commands and speak back to the user. It also works in both standard view and on the keyboard dictation view.Naturally, Apple is not authenticating commands to its servers [...]

Just like we’d heard, we’ll be getting our first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich next week, on October 19th to be precise. Of course we’ve already had a whiff of what it looks like in a video, and sampling the new Music and Google+ apps gave us another good look. But now we’re set to see it for real, and if all goes well we might just get some new hardware out of the deal, too. Will this be the day the Nexus Prime makes us think that flat smartphones are… well… square? We’ll be there live to let you know as it happens. The event takes place 10:00am HKT, which [...]

Like Zune’s own Business Development Manager once said, all consumer electronics products have a lifespan, and today the (not so long) lineage of dedicated Zune hardware expires not with a roar, but with a promise to honor its warranties. Tucked away in the inner chambers of the Zune support site lies a page spelling out Microsoft’s final words on the device, “Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy,” it says, “we will no longer be producing Zune players.” The Zune HD is survived by the Zune music service, which will continue [...]

According to a new screenshot posted today, AT&T is gearing up for the to-be announced iPhone 4S! The screenshot comes from the folks over at Engadget. Technically, it’s not a screenshot, it’s more a photograph of a screen taken by a camera but, anyway, it shows the “iPhone 4s White” listed under Model Version in AT&T’s internal system. There are a couple of things I’d like to talk about: firstly, the model is called ‘”iPhone 4s White” instead of “iPhone 4S White”. Remember the iPhone 3GS? Well, the ‘s’ was capital. So, if Apple does indeed introduce a low-end [...]

Inside Linux Mint Linux Mint’s meteoric rise to the top of the distro charts can be attributed to its perfect mix of usability and functionality. But if you think it’s just another Ubuntu-skinned distro, you’re very wrong. Unlike most popular Linux distros, Mint is the brainchild of just one man – Clement Lefebvre – yet it has managed to invigorate the community. It’s no surprise, then, that it looks to its legions of users for advice. Kendall Weaver, the man who maintains the LXDE edition of the distro, says Mint’s success is down to Lefebvre and his [...]
