LONDON: Former Cabinet ministers Patricia Hewitt and Geoff Hoon exploded an H-bomb under Gordon Brown yesterday by demanding a ballot on his leadership of Labour. They declared the party must decide once and for all if the PM is the right person to lead it into the General Election.
But a major Sun opinion poll revealed dumping Brown would not help the party”s dire prospects of a general election victory.
The rebels” explosive intervention – Labour”s last chance to dump Brown before the poll – plunged the party into civil war.

Chief Mediator Kofi Annan turned up the pressure for the need to try chief suspects of the post-election violence.
Annan, who was giving his parting speech at the end of six-day visit in Nairobi Tuesday said the arrest and prosecution of powerful politicians suspected to have funded and fanned post-election violence by the International Criminal Court would not frustrate reforms.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga led the ODM top brass in a well-attended public rally that played out like a show of force in the contest with his party deputy William Ruto.
Coming only a day after Ruto led a group of politicians to a rally in Kapenguria where he berated the PM, saying he regrets leading Rift Valley to ODM, the Mombasa rally was billed to be the make-or-break venue for the Ruto-Raila political contest.
