LONDON: Europe”s main stock markets rose strongly at the start of trading on Tuesday, with London”s benchmark FTSE 100 index of leading shares gaining 0.47 percent to 5,191.63 points. Frankfurt”s DAX 30 jumped by 1.12 percent to 5,573.07 points and in Paris the CAC 40 added 0.91 percent to stand at 3,641.97.

Consumer magazine Which? Computer says it has received complaints from a number of people who claim they have been falsely targeted by a law firm going after illegal file sharers. Which? states that some of those who have received letters from ACS:Law have no knowledge of the offences they’re alleged to have committed. 10 new people have approached the magazine since the law company sent out its most recent round of letters a fortnight ago. BUCHAREST: More than 40 people have died this week as eastern and central Europe battles a Siberian cold snap that has cut power and roads, disrupted air travel and stranded whole villages, officials said Monday. Snow has blanketed swathes of western Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania, with lows of minus 35 degrees Celsius (minus 31 Fahrenheit), while Poland has again been gripped by a deep freeze that has killed more than 200 in the country since November. BERLIN: Film buffs got their first glimpse on Thursday of parts of the groundbreaking German classic “Metropolis” thought to have been lost forever with a new exhibition ahead of a triumphant homecoming next month. A full version of Fritz Lang”s 1927 silent expressionist epic was found in Argentina in 2008, and after months of painstaking work, what is possibly Germany”s best-known movie has now been restored to almost its original state. The Mobile Premier Awards, perhaps the most prestigious startup competition in the mobile business, has named 48 companies to participate in its semi-final round. They were each nominated by their local MobileMonday chapters (groups that meet on a monthly basis around the world to talk about the hottest topics and issues in the industry). An international jury will select 20 finalists from this list that will each get a chance to pitch their company at the Mobile Premier Awards ceremony on Feb. 15 in Barcelona. Toyota plans to have more than 100 hydrogen fuel-cell cars on the road by 2013, the company has announced. While most of them will be given to government agencies and universities for testing in California and New York, expanding this pilot program is designed to attract consumers to the idea of hydrogen-powered cars before automakers introduce them to the market in 2015. This is the third pillar in Toyota’s robust green technology strategy. BERLIN: Snow and freezing weather swept parts of Europe on Saturday causing travel chaos for thousands and forecasters predicted no let-up in Britain”s harshest cold snap in 30 years. Rail and air travel were disrupted in Britain, France and Germany. Eurostar, the rail service linking England and France, said it was running around two-thirds of its normal Saturday service from London. A spokeswoman for the train operator encouraged people not to travel unless the trip was essential. Forecasters in Britain said icy winds from northern Europe meant the big freeze felt even colder after temperatures [...]

PARIS: After a dismal 2008, world stock markets recorded a spectacular rebound in 2009 even though the economy was in crisis, but confidence had not been completely restored and there were fears for 2010. In Frankfurt, the market ended the year 23 percent higher and in Paris it closed 22.32 percent up. London registered a 22.07 percent gain for the year and the Dow Jones, the star index of the New York Stock Exchange, showed an annual jump of 18.82 percent over the course of the year.
