Facebook officially took the “beta” label off its much-publicized Timeline this evening, but it’s rolling out the new feature gradually. New Zealand is currently the only country to get Timeline, the company said in a blog postthis evening. Other regions will get it in the “near future.” Facebook first unveiled Timeline in early September, and quickly provided the means for developers and curious users to enable the feature. A more general release was planned for later that month, but it never came, ostensibly to address technical issues and privacy concerns having to do with the software. Timeline, [...]

Here’s a situation: you create a Facebook account. You fall in love with said account. You’re on it all day, every single day. And then, your computer explodes. You go to login on a new machine, and you realize that your minty fresh browser has no recollection of your Facebook password. At this point, you’re probably pondering the point of taking another breath. Evidently, Facebook understands your dilemma, and in the coming weeks, it’ll be testing out a new password recovery system for those who can’t / won’t take advantage of the existing methods. Christened [...]

Scientists have found a direct link between the number of “friends” a person has on Facebook and the size of certain brain regions, raising the possibility that using online social networks might change our brains. The four brain areas involved are known to play a role in memory, emotional responses and social interactions. So far, however, it is not possible to say whether having more Facebook connections makes particular parts of the brain larger or whether some people are simply pre-disposed, or “hard-wired,” to have more friends. “The exciting question now is [...]

Human nature is really strange. We love what is very cheap, even by mistake. Also we very well know that what’s cheap is not good in most cases. But money is the miracle we think that we save and the things we are at a loss. Famous brands bone … Lots of bones. But the man would not have a man that does not serve all the cunning and ruin, and the well-known brands cheaper and less quality copies. There are copies of expensive, but it is not the issue price. The theme of this story have a copy, cheap copy, bad copy, funny copy. These cheap and funny stuff coming from less developed countries [...]

This morning Facebook announced Timeline, a crazy (and kind of creepy) omnibus look at everything that has ever happened in your Facebook lifespan. It’s like a story book of your life — or at least the online, documented parts. Facebook said that Timeline would be on the way for everyone sometime in the coming weeks… which is great and all, for everyone else. You’re the type of person who reads TechCrunch, and are thus likely the type of person who likes their new and shiny things right now. That’s okay. We can make it happen. Fortunately, enabling Timeline a bit early isn’t too difficult [...]

YouTube has unveiled a set of editing features for the site, which allow users to tweak their videos and add a number of effects. In a move that makes total sense – and something that should have been implemented a long time ago – users will now be able to trim their clips on the site, as well as stabilise shaky footage, boost the colours and contrast and even give the video a whole new look. The new features mean that we finally see the fruits of YouTube’s acquisition of image-editing company Green Parrot, back in March. Colour me bad YouTube has made it really easy to edit your footage. Facebook has announced a host of improvements to the way your friends are grouped on the site. The new Smart Lists feature automatically pulls together your work friends, old school pals and those in the same locale, based in the information you include in your profile. The Smart Lists are automatically collated by Facebook, but you’ll also have the opportunity to edit as you see fit. There’s also opportunity to blot out those annoying acquaintances by only viewing updates from your close friends list, meaning you see less of the stragglers. BFFs get their own feed The Close Friends [...]

Busy day for Yahoo – not only has the company given ex-CEO Carol Bartz the old heave ho, but it may also be up for sale. At least, that’s what an insider would have us believe, having told the Wall Street Journal that ‘Yahoo is open to selling itself to the right bidder’. Rumours are now swirling about which companies may be interested in picking up the once popular search engine company. Any old iron Microsoft made an unsuccessful bid for Yahoo shortly before Carol Bartz was hired in 2009, so it is currently considered one of the front-runners. AOL is also cropping up in most [...]

Wikileaks has released all the confidential US cables that it has accessed, making the 251,287 documents fully searchable online. Calling its move ‘cablegate’, Wikileaks has tweeted the documents in batches organised by country, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel, with multiple pleas for Wikileaks’ supporters to help source more capacity, donate money and hashtag any “important cable discoveries”. The documents include confidential, secret and classified correspondence within the US government, including the identities of international informants and undercover [...]
