Review: LG 42LV450U

The LG 42LV450U is a classy-looking, slender set that is equipped with edge LED lighting. It’s nice to find, too, that there’s a USB port available for playing back photo, music and video (including DivX HD) files from USB storage devices. But this is basically where the interesting specs end. There’s no Freeview HD tuner, something LG has always been quick to introduce further down its TV range. There’s no sign of any of LG’s Smart TV online services, either. Indeed, there isn’t even a LAN port to access the internet or files stored on DLNA PCs. Unfortunately [...]

Haier’s transparent organic TV

What’s the worst thing about your TV? If you said “opaqueness,” boy have we got the set from you. This is a 22-inch transparent organic TV from the folks at Haier (you know, the ones who also showed off that mind control TV today). It’s a slim display with a metal bezel that has a clear OLED at its center with a 1680 x 1050 resolution. The images appeared pretty sharp on screen, though the colors didn’t particularly pop. And really, this thing isn’t likely headed to any living rooms in the near future — Haier sees it more as an advertising tool, letting [...]

Samsung 60D8000 LED Smart TV

As we said when we first saw the Samsung D8000 Series Smart TV at CES back in January, Samsung’s new flagship TV line is nothing short of stunning. And now at IFA 2011 the Korean manufacturer has produced a huge 60-inch version- the 60D8000 LED Smart TV complete with an ultra-thin 1.5cm bezel. It’s a truly impressive sight, so we thought we’d snap a bunch of shots for you. The new LED TV also features an updated version of Samsung’s Smart Hub software, while there’s even a built-in recorder for Freeview+ if you connect up some storage. Samsung is boasting it will have [...]

Mitsubishi Home Cinema Laser Display

Would you pay £4,000+ for the best TV ever? Mitsubishi is hoping so, but just can’t make up its mind whether to launch its Home Cinema Laser Display in Europe. We do hope it does. Our extended demo with this very special display proved one thing: rear projection TVs are brilliant, and – thanks to lasers – approaching a position where the achievable size and, crucially, picture quality advantages over both plasma and LCD (and that includes LED backlit variants) are significant enough to attract the high rollers after a slice movie perfection. We knew this would happen. Just a few [...]

First Glasses Free 3D TV in UK: Toshiba 55ZL2

Toshiba has unveiled the UK’s first glasses-free 3D TV – with the 55-inch ZL2 offering the latest television tech and ditching the specs. The Toshiba ZL2 offers up face tracking, Resolution+, Auto-calibration, 2D to 3D conversion and smart TV features. Make no mistake about it, this is high-end television with Toshiba billing it as its ‘most advanced TV to date’. “Built to provide exceptional all round performance, the ZL2 removes all barriers to enjoying 3D entertainment – offering viewers the freedom to experience a next-generation home cinema experience in the most [...]

Review: Toshiba 42RL853B

It’s business as usual on the Tosh telly front, with nothing but meek budget offerings. The Toshiba 42RL853B is one of the latest journeyman shelf-fillers. At 40mm thin, it’s in line with higher-end designs from rival screen makers. But its plastic back panel creaks in a distinctly budget fashion and build is average. The screen offers four HDMI inputs (one side-mounted), plus component, stereo phonos, PC input and a digital audio output. There’s also a single USB input and Ethernet LAN. There’s no integrated Wi-Fi (unsurprisingly), but you can always buy a dongle if you [...]

Review: Toshiba 37RL853B

The Toshiba 37RL853B offers a little bit of everything – it’s a contemporary looking LCD TV with an LED edge-lit Full HD panel, decent connectivity, Freeview HD, plenty of user-adjustable tweaks and smattering of multi-media features including access to iPlayer and YouTube. Not bad really for what is after all, a budget TV. The 37RL853 sits slap bang in the middle of Toshiba’s RL series, with the 32-inch 32RL853 and 42-inch 42RL853 offering the same specification for around £50 less and £100 more respectively. The RL series itself is more or less in the middle of Toshiba’s [...]

Review: LG 42LV550T

Although LG’s passive 3D system has comprehensively proven its worth, at least where relatively compact screen sizes are concerned, it still comes as a slight relief to find that the brand’s 42LV550T doesn’t have 3D built in. It means there’s no need to have to get into the whole passive vs active 3D philosophical debate again, allowing this review to focus solely on the product itself rather than larger issues beyond it. What’s more, despite its lack of 3D, the 42-inch smart TV has a decent quantity of tricks to get stuck into. The LV550T series does, after all, represent [...]

Review: LG 50PW450

LG’s 50PW450T is a remarkably affordable, 50-inch plasma TV with active shutter 3D technology. Its eye-popping value credentials are underlined by a built-in 3D transmitter and the fact that it ships with a pair of 3D specs, putting plenty of its more expensive rivals to shame. The 50PW450 also squeezes in a Freeview HD tuner and a USB port capable of playing back photo, music and video files. DLNA streaming is not supported, though, and there is no online capability beyond whatever may be possible with the Freeview HD tuner in the future. The 50PW450T’s resolution is 1,024 x 768 pixels, [...]

Review: Toshiba 32DB833

The Toshiba 32DB833 is a 32-inch full HD TV with a built-in Blu-ray player. This solves the perennial combi problem of (mis)matching hi-def screens with standard-definition DVD drives and enables both components to perform to their full potential. The 32DB833 isn’t the first TV to carry an integrated Blu-ray player, of course; Sony’s EX43B models were the first, and the 32-inch version was still available at the time of writing. The Toshiba 32DB833 has a massive price advantage over its Sony rivals, though, coming in at around £250 cheaper than the equivalent (same size) model. This [...]
