Samsung Series 3 350U Laptop

Sorry folks, this colorful Series 3 lappy from Sammy is for the fine citizens of Korea only, at least for the moment. The 350U weighs in at just under three pounds and 0.8-inches thick, while housing a Core i5, up to a 640GB HD, a 12.5-inch anti-reflective screen, and a battery large enough to keep it chugging along for over eight hours. Really, the big difference between this notebook and the same-sized Series 3 shipping here in the states are the color options. While Americans all get the same gun-metal gray, our friends across the pacific can pick black, silver or pink (you know, for the ladies). [...]

ASUS G74SX-A1 Gaming Laptop

The 1982 Lockheed Sea Shadow may be rusting away in Suisun Bay, but its Commie-spooking contours haven’t been forgotten. They apparently inspired the design of the Asus G74SX-A1, which just won a HotHardware recommendation for its cheese-eschewing looks as well as its performance, efficient cooling and realistic $1749 price tag. For once, the Core i7-2360QM CPU coupled with a GeForce GTX 560M and generous 12GB dollop of DDR-1333 RAM actually conspired to surpass the manufacturer’s 3DMark benchmark claims. It wasn’t flawless though: overall computing performance was middling compared [...]

Lenovo IdeaPad U300 S

In a couple of days that saw the announcement of a raft of Intel Ultrabooks here at IFA 2011, the Lenovo U300 S looks to set the bar high, with incredible power and a great design to boot. The slim 13.3-inch body measures just 14.9mm at its thickest point, making it one of the thinnest ultrabooks we’ve seen. Only yesterday, Toshiba announced its Portege Z830 which measured just 15.9mm, and the pace at which manufacturers are releasing, means it’s likely we’ll see thinner again. The whole package weighs 1.3kg, which in ultrabook terms is heavy. Acer has managed to get its ultrabook [...]

Acer Aspire S3

We had some hands-on action with Acer’s new Aspire S3 Series Ultrabook this morning, in a packed and sweaty Berlin hall at IFA 2011. The Taiwanese giant has really impressed us with its great value laptops this year, so we were keen to check out this ultra-slim lapt top, which is just 17mm at itshickest point, and 13mm at its thinnest. This makes it slightly slimmer than the Samsung 9003X, which was already impressively slender. The metal chassis looks reassuringly solid, constructed from a lightweight aluminium/magnesium alloy. We were impressed at just how light the Aspire S3 feels when [...]

Top 8 Best Laptops For School

Best laptop for school Tablet PCs are a threat to laptops in a number of ways. They’re more portable, easier to use, and more desirable. However, there’s one area where laptops have the upper hand: so far, no tablet is as comfortable to work on for long periods of time, or as good at multitasking. These are key considerations when buying a machine for studying. Laptops used for learning need to be three things. First, they must be portable – they need to be taken to classrooms, lecture halls, libraries and the like. While they should be small and light enough to be carried about, [...]

Review: Sony VAIO VPCCA2Z0E

If the powerful Z-series is the big brother of the Sony VAIO family, then the updated Sony VAIO C-series is definitely the attractive cousin. We originally reviewed the VAIO C Series at the start of this month, but that iteration was packing a Core i5 processor and dedicated graphics. Now we have our hands on the more affordable VAIO-VPC-CA2Z0E Core i3 version. Available in a choice of five different colours, this mid-level lifestyle laptop has a number of features that make it worth a look if you’re tired of the same old black or silver design of other machines. Our review unit was a bright [...]

Review: MSI FX720 Laptop

So the British summer is having another shocker, and let’s face it, autumn will likely be just as grim. On that merry note, it’s well worth saving up some cash for a new entertainment machine to keep you occupied during those long, dark evenings, so you don’t have to resort to conversations with family members. We’ve seen some excellent and unique multimedia laptops recently, from the sleek and powerful Dell XPS 15z, to the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G, with its detachable remote control touchpad. The MSI FX720 certainly has a lot of competition, but it comes with a less eye-watering [...]
