In May Linux finally saw the release of kernel version 3.0, an evolutionary update to the popular open-source platform that was nearly 15 years in the making. Today, version 3.1 is making its debut, once again primarily offering small tweaks like better support for Intel’s Ivy Bridge and Cedar Trail chips and improved power management. But there are some new features getting baked in, including support for NFC and drivers for Wiimotes. The brave amongst you can download the sources from Git now (it hasn’t been posted to Kernel.org just yet), but we suggest you hold out until your distro [...]

We came across an unbelievably cool app/script today. It’s a tool that, I believe, is something every Android enthusiast – particularly those who flash custom ROMs regularly – must include in their utility apps toolbox alongside apps like ROM Manager and Titanium Backup. The tool is called Mass APK Installer and, as you may have guessed from its name, it lets you install a multiple APK files on an Android smartphone with the click of a button. The script comes from KarmaToBurn from XDA Developers – a popular Android development forum. KarmaToBurn’s script radically simplifies the process [...]

In case you haven’t been keeping an eye on the countdown, we thought we’d remind you that Ubuntu 11.10 — otherwise known as Oneiric Ocelot — is now available to download (completely free of charge, of course). That brings with it an updated version of the Unity interface that includes features like a new alt + tab switcher and “Lenses” with some expanded functionality instead of the previous “Places” feature — not to mention full support for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other script languages. Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S only began shipping this week, but a handful of early owners have already taken Apple’s first A5-based smartphone for a test run, and they’ve got the benchmarks to prove it. The results, obtained by AnandTech, are hardly what we’d call shocking. In terms of Javascript performance (pictured above), the 4S measures up rather nicely against the Tegra 2-based Honeycomb competition, while out-dueling the iPhone 4 in overall CPU muscle. Geekbench results, meanwhile, clock the 4S at around 800MHz, with a score of 623. That’s about 25 percent lower [...]

After years of promises, Adobe has finally delivered a Flash Player that offers full support for 64-bit browsers. A snippet of code posted on Google’s Chromium Code website reveals that Google’s Chrome browser is to be ported to its Android smartphone operating system. It may seem like an obvious move for the two Google-operated products, but they’ve been run as completely separate entities – until now. The Chromium website hosts Google’s open-source features for the browser, and generally everything that appears there will later be integrated into the browser itself. The Chrome Android code currently lacks the tabbed browsing and plug-ins that adorn its desktop counterpart. Get [...]
